Illustration Friday

"Ironic, isn't it? Look at what we have done to the man who refused to conform his ideals to popular taste. Who refused to compromise his integrity. We have put him in a tiny box and asked you to copy him." Katherine Watson from "Mona Lisa Smile" discussing Van Gogh

This weeks theme for Illustration Friday was "Popularity". At first I was completely stumped for what to draw. How could I show popularity? That's when a quote I love from a movie that I find truly inspiring popped into my head. "Mona Lisa Smile" is a beautiful movie filled with wonderful and interesting characters and a love for art. The costuming and setting was beautiful as well.

The quote that inspired me is part of a bigger conversation between Katherine Watson (an art history professor) and her students about how Van Gogh painted and was not always a popular as he has become. I also connect to this movie with a bit of nostalgia because it's about an art history class at and all woman's college. My friends and I would romanticize about which of us were like the ladies in the movie.

So all of this is what brought me to be inspired.Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists so this week I choose to bring light to a favorite quote, from a favorite movie, about a favorite artist.
